Abstract
We examined antibioic resistance of 152 strains of staphylococcus aureus and 52 strains of Stahylococcus epidermidis which were isolated at Kosin Medical College Hospital from January, 1989 to May, 1989. Antimicrobial susceptibity was tested by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method and agar dilution method. Following results were obtained.
1. The isolation rate of MRSA¢¥ and MRSE¢¥ was 55.9% and 27% respectively.
2. The isolation rate of MRSA was 60.3% in inpatients and 28.6% in outpatients.
3. The isolation rate of MRSE was 28.2% in inpatients and 23% in outpatients.
4. MRSA was most frequently isolated from pus, and next frequent site was respiratory and urinary specimen. MRSE was frequently isolated from sputum, blood, urine.
5. Vancomycin showed the lowest MIC range in MRSA(0.5-1 Pg/m8) and MRSE(0.5-2 pg/m2), and none of MRSA and MRSE strains were resistant to vancomycin.
In conclusion, MRSA ad MRSE are highly prevalent in this hospital, and we should be aware of this problem in patient management.
* MRSA : Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus
* MRSE : Methicillin resistant staphylococcus epidermidis
